We made some more progress on the front yard. Roman did the hard work and pulled a bunch of weeds and removed dirt to make this area level. Then I put down some weed blocker.
We know that our yard won't be the prettiest with all this decomposed granite and the minimal greenery, but it will look clean and that is what we are going for right now. The following is a picture that really shows why we have decided to go the route that we are.
The area above is between the sidewalk and the street. We haven't gotten to it yet, but is is going to get the granite treatment as well. See all the green reed type things going everywhere? Every time we've tried to plant plants, these reeds just take over. Here's a closeup of the plants I am talking about:

At first we put the granite right up to the tree, but it looked pretty bad. So we added some bricks and wood chips that we already had and were really happy with the result.
We also put the wine barrel planter in its spot.
Just a couple more areas and we will be done with the granite.
